I won in the special Wikimedia category "Protection of Protected Areas" (2021)

As Ukrainian part of the international photo contest Wiki Loves the Earth, which took place in June 2021, the organizers of the contest, together with the Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group NGO, organized a special nomination "Protecting Protected Areas".

The purpose of the special nomination was to show how people in Ukraine stand for the protection of nature reserves by collecting photos of protests, marches, performances, and other thematic events. The expert jury selected five winning photos out of nearly a thousand submitted for this nomination. 

The jury consisted of six experts, and the voting took place in two rounds. According to its results, all the winning photos belong to one author – me, Oleg Andros.

Before the full-scale Russo-Ukrainian ar, I was actively involved in lobbying for the creation of nature reserves in Kyiv, preserving Zhukiv Island, Lysa Hora and other areas, protected and not. At the same time, I was fond of photography. My first shots were taken with film cameras. Since 2000, I had accumulated a large archive of photos, which I periodically upload to Wikimedia Commons.

Пікет 13 березня 2010 року під Київрадою, суміщений з символічною ходою Хрещатиком у протигазах на захист Київської природи. Учасники пікетування висловили своє обурення нищенням природного середовища Києва за останнє десятиліття та закликали територіальну громаду Києва гуртуватися та виступити проти сваволі забудовників.

Пікет 22 листопада 2013 року під стінами Національної комісії, що здійснює державне регулювання у сфері енергетики, на знак протесту проти загрози вирубки лісів на Поліссі для спалювання їх на теплоелектростанціях. Акція включала поліські народні пісні та драматичний поєдинок бобра та лісоруба.

"I have a large archive of reportage photos that I did not publish anywhere at the time (I started working professionally in journalism in 2020, before that I went to the rallies at the call of my soul). I wanted to show this slice of events since 2005 to the public.

The very idea of a contest like Wiki Loves Earth is a good one, as these contests will help more people, like me, to "unearth" the archives and publish previously unknown photos (or, for example, add text to the pages). In the end, it's nice to feel that your private property is useful to someone. Wikiprojects are the future of archival, librarianship and environmental education," said the winner of the special nomination, Oleg Andros.

  Olha Chusova, botanist, M.G. Kholodnyi Institute of Botany;
• Ihor Sirenko, photographer, Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group.

All the photos submitted for the special nomination (not only the top 5 winners) automatically took part in the special nomination Human Rights and Environment of the international stage of Wiki Loves Earth.

With this nomination, the international team of the photo contest joins the #WikiForHumanRights campaign, which is jointly organized by the Wikimedia Foundation and the United Nations. The winners of the special category were announced in December 2021.

One of my photos also won the third prize in the Human Rights and Environment category of the international part of Wiki Loves Earth. The photo depicts a picket on November 22, 2013, to protest the threat of deforestation in Polissia to burn them at thermal power plants. The action included Polissya folk songs and a dramatic fight between a beaver and a logger.
